Navigating Memorialization and Commemoration on U.S. Campuses - Approaches to Crisis Recovery: Mahauganee D. Shaw Bonds Navigating Memorialization and Commemoration on U.S. Campuses - Approaches to Crisis Recovery
Mahauganee D. Shaw Bonds
R1,246 Discovery Miles 12 460 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Drawing on rich qualitative data, as well as theoretical and conceptual frameworks, this text explores how institutions of higher education in the US can effectively remember incidents of campus crisis through physical memorials and commemoration. Recognizing memorialization as a process of group and individual recovery, the book foregrounds the performative functions of physical memorials, and highlights their utility for the extended campus community. Profiling existing campus memorials in the US, and offering insights from students, faculty, community members, and the loved ones of those memorialized, the text illustrates how institutional decisions and long-term strategy can serve to effectively navigate the politics of memorialization, helping communities move beyond incidents of collective trauma. This text will benefit researchers, academics, and educators with an interest in emergency management, student affairs practice and higher education administration, and commemorative literature more broadly. Those specifically interested in heritage studies, public history, and American history will also benefit from this book.

Chaplains to the Imprisoned - Sharing Life with the Incarcerated (Paperback): Richard D. Shaw Chaplains to the Imprisoned - Sharing Life with the Incarcerated (Paperback)
Richard D. Shaw
R1,443 Discovery Miles 14 430 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Chaplains to the Imprisoned begins to fill the information gap through its in-depth study of prison chaplains as seen by co-workers, inmates, and the chaplains themselves. They describe their roles, share difficulties which are encountered in their ministry, and personal methods for coping with these difficulties, especially those which may be internalized as stress. The author, a Roman Catholic priest with a doctorate in criminal justice, provides a fascinating look into the work of chaplains who serve in correctional institutions. This new book sheds a much-needed light on the often hidden, yet significant, role played by chaplains within correctional facilities. Little is known of these chaplains and the work that they do. Though they are frequently depicted in television and film, many of these images are stereotypes from writers'imaginations. In this unique book, chaplains speak for themselves through the results of a survey questionnaire sent by the author to local- and state-level chaplains in New York State and to chaplains throughout the federal prison system. Chaplains to the Imprisoned, the first non-denominational book on these clergy, explores: the history of chaplaincy in this country, including the irony that chaplains have often been treated as unwanted intruders in penitentiaries--which were created originally by religious groups chaplains as seen by other professionals in the field--sometimes positive, often negative, opinions of chaplains drawn from literature written by wardens, corrections officers, and others who deal with chaplains on a routine basis chaplains as seen by inmates--published opinions by inmates who have recorded their impressions of facility chaplains chaplains as seen by chaplains--their own descriptions of their work, frustrations, successes, and failures, along with suggestions for the betterment of the role of chaplainsThis book is an eye-opening look into the world of prison chaplaincy for students of criminal justice and religion, policymakers for prisons and jails, seminary students, and clergy members themselves, as well as individuals interested in what often goes on behind prison walls from a chaplain's perspective.

Growing up in the late 1800s, Black Elk saw that the American Indian way of life was in great danger of disappearing. In his old age, he told his life story, in great detail, to writer John Neihardt, allowing the spiritual beliefs, ceremonies, and religion of the Plains Indians to be preserved and passed on to new generations of Indian people. Black Elk fulfilled his vision of protecting his people as the Great Spirit had told him he was meant to do. Through historically accurate illustrations and photos, inspiring age-appropriate activities, and Black Elk's own words, this colorful biography introduces a remarkable person to children in a way they can understand and enjoy. Includes resources for parents and teachers, a list of important words to know, and a timeline of events in the life of Black Elk.

Environment and Society in Roman North Africa - Studies in History and Archaeology (Hardcover, New Ed): Brent D. Shaw Environment and Society in Roman North Africa - Studies in History and Archaeology (Hardcover, New Ed)
Brent D. Shaw
R3,704 Discovery Miles 37 040 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The impact of a changing environment on human society and, conversely, the impact of man's activities upon the environment are important and contentious subjects today. Climatic and environmental change have also been credited with bringing about major shifts in human history. One such case is that of the decline of Roman North Africa and its conquest by the Arabs. The evidence for this process is, however, far from clear-cut, and Professor Shaw's concern in these studies is firstly to re-examine what is known, from both archaeological and written sources, and how it has been interpreted, work which has led to some substantial revisions of accepted accounts. In the final three articles he turns to analyse how Roman society functioned on the edge of the desert and, in particular, to investigate the careful exploitation and control of critical water resources.

Sacred Violence - African Christians and Sectarian Hatred in the Age of Augustine (Hardcover): Brent D. Shaw Sacred Violence - African Christians and Sectarian Hatred in the Age of Augustine (Hardcover)
Brent D. Shaw
R3,762 Discovery Miles 37 620 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

One route to understanding the nature of specifically religious violence is the study of past conflicts. Distinguished ancient historian Brent D. Shaw provides a new analysis of the intense sectarian battles between the Catholic and Donatist churches of North Africa in late antiquity, in which Augustine played a central role as Bishop of Hippo. The development and deployment of images of hatred, including that of the heretic, the pagan, and the Jew, and the modes by which these were most effectively employed, including the oral world of the sermon, were critical to promoting acts of violence. Shaw explores how the emerging ecclesiastical structures of the Christian church, on one side, and those of the Roman imperial state, on the other, interacted to repress or excite violent action. Finally, the meaning and construction of the acts themselves, including the Western idea of suicide, are shown to emerge from the conflict itself.

Phytophthora - Symposium of the British Mycological Society, the British Society for Plant Pathology and the Society of Irish Plant Pathologists Held at Trinity College, Dublin September 1989 (Paperback)
J.A. Lucas, R. C. Shattock, D. S. Shaw, Louise R. Cook
R2,089 Discovery Miles 20 890 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The seventeenth symposium of the British Mycological Society was held jointly with the British Society for Plant Pathology and the Society of Irish Plant Pathologists. The subject of the symposium was Phytophthora, the organism responsible for many plant diseases, most notably potato blight. This 1991 book presents the results of the meeting in a wide-ranging volume incorporating chapters discussing the history of potato blight, host-pathogen reactions, systematics and intraspecific variation, molecular and genetic studies and the development of effective control methods. Arguably the most studied of all plant pathogens, Phytophthora remains a problem in modern agriculture.

Atomic Diffusion in Semiconductors (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1973): D. Shaw Atomic Diffusion in Semiconductors (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1973)
D. Shaw
R3,052 Discovery Miles 30 520 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The diffusion or migration of atoms in matter, of whatever form, is a basic consequence of the existence of atoms. In metals, atomic diffusion has a well established position of importance as it is recognized that there are few metallurgical processes which do not embody the diffusion of one or more of the constituents. As regards semiconductors any thermal annealing treatment involves atomic diffusion. In semiconductor technology diffusion processes provide a vital and basic means of fabricating doped structures. Notwithstanding the importance of diffusion in the preparative processes of semiconductor structures and samples, the diffusion based aspects have acquired an empirical outlook verging almost on alchemy. The first attempt to present a systematic account of semiconductor diffusion processes was made by Boltaks [11 in 1961. During the decade since Boltaks' book appeared much work germane to understanding the atomic mechanisms responsible for diffusion in semiconductors has been published. The object of the present book is to give an account of, and to consolidate, present knowledge of semiconductor diffusion in terms of basic concepts of atomic migration in crystalline lattices. To this end, exhaustive compilations of empirical data have been avoided as these are available elsewhere [2, 31 : attention has been limited to considering evidence capable of yielding insight into the physical processes concerned in atomic diffusion.

Mechanism of Action (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1967): David Gottlieb, Paul D Shaw Mechanism of Action (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1967)
David Gottlieb, Paul D Shaw
R1,787 Discovery Miles 17 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The idea for publishing these books on the mechanism of action and on the biosynthesis of antibiotics was born of frustration in our attempts to keep abreast of the literature. Gone were the years when we were able to keep a biblio graphy on antibiotics and feel confident that we could find everything that was being published on this subject. These fields of investigation were moving for ward so rapidly and were encompassing so wide a range of specialized areas in microbiology and chemistry that it was almost impossible to keep abreast of developments. In our naivete and enthusiasm, however, we were unaware that we were toying with an idea that might enmesh us, that we were creating an entity with a life of its own, that we were letting loose a Golom who instead of being our servant would be our master. That we set up ideals for these books is obvious; they would be current guides to developments and information in the areas of mechanism of action and bio synthesis of antibiotics. For almost every subject, we wished to enlist the aid of an investigator who himself had played a part in determining the nature of the phenomena that were being discussed. One concept for the books was that they include only antibiotics for which a definitive, well-documented mechanism of action or biosynthetic pathway was known.

Necessary Conjunctions - The Social Self in Medieval England (Hardcover, 2005 ed.): D. Shaw Necessary Conjunctions - The Social Self in Medieval England (Hardcover, 2005 ed.)
D. Shaw
R1,575 Discovery Miles 15 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Necessary Conjunctions" is an original study of how regular medieval people created their public social identities. Focusing especially on the world of English townspeople in the later Middle Ages, the book explores the social self, the public face of the individual. It gives special attention to how prevalent norms of honor, fidelity and hierarchy guided and were manipulated by medieval citizens. With variable success, medieval men and women defined themselves and each other by the clothes they work, the goods they cherished, as well as by their alliances and enemies, their sharp tongues and petty violence. Employing a highly interdisciplinary methodology and an original theory makes it possible to see how personal agency and identity developed within the framework of later medieval power structures.
